Lymphoma is an uncontrolled division of lymphocytes, affecting organs in the lymphatic system as well as other organs in the body. Includes 2 main types: non-Hodgkin lymphoma (about 90%) and Hodgkin lymphoma. In general, non-Hodgkin lymphoma has a poor prognosis and is more difficult to treat than Hodgkin lymphoma.
As noted by the Global Cancer Organization GLOBOCAN 2020, (1) the world has about 545,000 new cases and nearly 260,000 deaths from lymphoma. According to statistics in the Philippines in 2023, non-Hodgkin lymphoma recorded more than 3,700 new cases and was the cause of death for more than 2,200 people, ranking 13th among the most common cancers in the Philippines. Lymphoma can occur in children, adolescents, and adults. The incidence of lymphoma is higher in men than in women, usually occurring in the 35-40 age group. The average age of the disease is recorded in the range of 50-60 years. Currently, the incidence of lymphoma tends to increase, usually in the elderly.
